Conceived in August 2025 and completed in February 1926, this artwork marks a turning point in Aj Roi's artistic evolution: "General Behind the Hill" is in fact the first to simultaneously feature a scene on the front and back.
The artist painted a bloody battle on the front of the sign "dosso," in which infantry soldiers lose their lives or are seriously injured; while on the back of the sign (behind the hill), we find the general observing the chaos of war behind a screen, protected by the walls of his bunker, while enjoying a coffee.
"If generals, ministers, and presidents fought on the front lines, there would be far fewer wars." ~Aj Roi
